We would all like to think that we can do something spectacular on our own, but saving the planet has got to be a joint effort. We face the choice of radically changing our lifestyles or coming up with engineering solutions that reduce global warming.
At the moment when we are facing together the worst health and economic crisis in a generation, it may be tempting to think that there is a choice to be made between COVID-19 and the planet. There is no such choice. We need to tackle both and in both cases we will turn to technology - whether through our medical experts or our engineers.
Since I run an engineering and environmental company, I am going concentrate on this post on what we can do immediately for the planet.
Most, if not all, the technology we need is already available and I have spoken about the need for companies to adopt a common-sense policy that they will prioritise investments that save water, energy or cut pollution, when there is a short or medium-term payback. Every little helps and if we all get involved, it adds up to a lot.
What does this mean in practice? At AESSEAL plc we got close to net zero in terms of our carbon footprint, largely by cutting our own energy and water use, as well as investing in some quite worthwhile offsetting projects. What finally got us down to the target, and perhaps, depending on the final sums, will push us lower, are all the companies and individuals who have decided that it really does make sense, both for the environment and for their business, to take a stand. These are companies that are making their own contributions to saving the planet by adopting better technical solutions on the advice of AESSEAL®. In some cases we have shared a bit of the “carbon credit”.
However, these are just the companies we know about and it’s not all about us! I know there are great stories out there from those who are working away in the background to put the world in a better shape. If you are one of these, we want to hear about you too, and want to share this. We all need to learn from each other.
It doesn’t matter if you are an AESSEAL® customer or not: send your case study to firstname.lastname@example.org, think about adopting a policy, and we will publish the best case studies on https://betterworld.solutions. On a regular basis, I will be reporting personally on some of these cases in a special series – ‘The heroes of net zero’.
If enough businesses act, together we can slow down or help to prevent Global Warming.
The purpose of this communication is to encourage the Boards of companies worldwide to create a simple to understand policy.
Just a few examples where we have the know-how to do things differently and help both the environment and the bottom line.
