When a company is young and struggling to survive, there may be a temptation to exaggerate what you can do for customers. There’s certainly no need to be shy about stressing your strengths, but over-promising and under-delivering is not a recipe for long-term success. When entering a new market and making contacts, there’s nothing more off-putting than a pushy and probably inaccurate sales pitch. I don’t think anyone likes receiving messages that are simply disguised sales and, to be frank, while LinkedIn has many strengths, my InMail box tells me that it is not immune to this disease. Let’s be clear, spam doesn’t work with professional engineers, factory plant managers, or the directors of large and successful businesses.
